Europe has a new king! His Majesty King Frederik X of Denmark ascended the Danish throne on January 14, 2024, upon the abdication of his mother, Queen Margrethe II.

On December 31, 2024, Queen Margrethe II shocked the world when she announced her plan to abdicate on the 52nd anniversary of her reign (January 14, 2024) for health reasons. 

The Queen ascended to the Danish throne on January 14, 1972, upon the death of her father, King Frederik IX. She was the second Danish monarch who voluntarily abdicated the throne since Eric III in the 12th century.

Queen Margrethe II's abdication was the fourth in Europe in the 21st century - Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands on April 30, 2013, King Albert II of Belgium on July 21, 2013, and King Juan Carlos I of Spain on June 19, 2014.

Denmark has no coronation ceremony like in the United Kingdom. On January 14, Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, just proclaimed King Frederik X the new Danish monarch, the occasion also served as his enthronement day.

Following the proclamation, King Frederik X, his wife Queen Mary, and their three children - Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent, and Princess Josephine, appeared on the palace's balcony to wave to the crowd below.
